Our practice combines physician administered anesthesia with anesthesia care team services utilizing hospital employed CRNAs.
We have eleven anesthesiologists, all board certified or in the certification process, and one boarded anesthesiologist who provides pain management services at our pain clinic.

J. Lawrence Jayne, Jr., M.D. |

Dr. Jayne joined BAS in 1981. He received his medical degree from the University Of Tennessee College Of Medicine in Memphis. He completed an internship and residency through the Naval Hospital in Philadelphia. Dr. Jayne previously served as President of the Tennessee Society of Anesthesiologists and the Sullivan County Medical Society. Dr. Jayne currently serves as Medical Director at Bristol Surgery Center. Dr. Jayne is Board Certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology. |

William D. Smith, M.D. |

Dr. Smith joined BAS in 1986. He received his medical degree from West Virginia School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency at West Virginia University Medical Center. He also completed a fellowship in Pain Management at West Virginia University Medical Center and a fellowship in Cardiovascular Anesthesia at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh. Dr. Smith’s clinical interest is cardiovascular anesthesia. Dr. Smith is past-president of the Sullivan County Medical Society and is past chairman of the Department of Surgery. He has served as the Medical Director of the Bristol Surgery Center. He serves on the BRMC Board of Directors and on the Board Executive Committee. He has served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Medical Staff. He is currently Vice-President of the Medical Staff and will serve as Chief of the Medical Staff for Bristol Regional Medical Center in 2009-2010. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology and is also Board Certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology in Pain Management. He is Board Certified in Perioperative TEE by the National Board of Echocardiography. |

Richard M. Penny, M.D. |

Dr. Penny joined BAS in 1988. He received his medical degree from the University of Kentucky in Lexington. He completed an internship, residency, and fellowship through the University Of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Clinical interests include cardiovascular anesthesia and operating room management. Dr. Penny currently directs operating room service at BRMC and is a past chairman of the Department of Surgery. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology. |

Robert D. McKay, M.D. |

Dr. McKay joined BAS in 1990. He received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He completed his internship and residency at National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda. He completed a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at National Naval Medical Center, and a fellowship in Neurosurgical Anesthesia at the Mayo Clinic. Prior to coming to Bristol, Dr. McKay served on the faculty of the University of Alabama in the Department of Anesthesia and conducted research in cerebral blood flow during carotid endarterectomy and during cardiopulmonary bypass. Dr. McKay has served as President of the Medical Staff at Bristol Regional Medical Center, and served on the Board of the Wellmont Health System. He has also served as Chairman of the Medical Staff Credentials Committee. Dr. McKay is Board Certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology. |

Stefan J. Grenvik, M.D. |

Dr. Grenvik joined BAS in 1993. He received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1989. He completed his internship and residency at the Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh. Dr. Grenvik’s clinical interest is cardiac anesthesia. Dr. Grenvik has previously served as the chairman of the Anesthesia Section of BRMC and Secretary/Treasurer of the Medical Staff and is Board Certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology. |

Marilyn J. Goldstein, M.D.

Dr. Goldstein joined BAS in 1998. She received her medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, IN, in 1988. She completed her transitional internship and residency in anesthesiology at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital, Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC. She held the position of Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine and has published a chapter in a textbook as well as journal articles. Dr. Goldstein’s clinical interest is obstetrical anesthesia. She has served as the Chairman of the Anesthesia Section at BRMC and is Board Certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology.. |

Timothy E. Mercer, M.D. |

Dr. Mercer joined BAS in 2006. He received his medical degree from Loma Linda University in 1985. He completed an integrated anesthesiology residency at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. Dr. Mercer is Board Certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology. |

Robert I. Macfarlane, M.D. |

Dr. Macfarlane joined BAS in 2007. He completed Medical School at Saba University, Gardner Massachusetts in 2003. He completed a combined Internship and Anesthesiology residency at University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2007. Dr. Macfarlane is board certified with The American Board of Anesthesiology and currently serves as Chairman of the Anesthesia Section at Bristol Regional Medical Center. |

Elisa C. Schuetz, M.D. |

Dr. Schuetz joined Bas in 2008. She received her medical degree in 2001 from the University of South Florida and is board certified with The American Board of Anesthesiology. |

Meredith M. Kirkpatrick, M.D. |

Dr. Kirkpatrick joined BAS in 2009. She completed medical school at The University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2005. She completed an internship with Baptist Health System in Birmingham, Alabama, followed by an Anesthesiology residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2009.

Joseph M. Nounou, M.D. |

Dr. Nounou joined BAS in 2009. He completed Medical School at The University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine in 2004. He completed a surgical internship at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati, and completed his Anesthesiology residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio in 2009. Dr. Nounou is in the process of becoming board certified with The American Board of Anesthesiology. |
